Seed Storage Made Simple: Keep Your Seeds Fresh for Future GrowthUpdated 4 months ago
Cannabis seeds are naturally resilient, but proper storage is key to keeping them viable for future planting. Whether you’re saving seeds for a future grow or want to ensure you get the most out of your purchase, following proper storage guidelines can help preserve seed quality. This guide will walk you through the essentials of storing cannabis seeds to maintain their freshness.
Why Proper Storage Matters
Cannabis seeds in their dormant state are essentially "asleep," waiting for ideal conditions to sprout. However, environmental factors like humidity, light, temperature, and oxygen can disrupt this dormancy and negatively affect their ability to germinate.
Humidity – Seeds exposed to high humidity may sprout prematurely or develop mold. For best results, aim for a cool, dark environment with a humidity level between 41-46°F (5-8°C).
Light Exposure – Exposure to light can trigger seeds to consume stored nutrients, reducing their future viability. Always store seeds in a dark place.
Temperature – High temperatures can weaken seeds and shorten their lifespan. Choose a cool storage area, such as a refrigerator or a dark, cool cabinet.
Oxygen – Prolonged exposure to oxygen can reduce the shelf life of seeds. An airtight container is essential to minimize oxygen contact.
Tips for Storing Cannabis Seeds
Choose a Cool, Dark Spot – The ideal storage location is one that stays consistently cool and dark. Avoid areas prone to temperature fluctuations, like near windows or heaters.
Use a Dark, Airtight Container – A mason jar with a tight-fitting lid works perfectly. To further protect your seeds, add silica gel packets to help keep humidity levels low.
Label Your Seeds – Always label your containers with strain names and dates. This prevents confusion, especially when storing multiple strains like autoflowers and photoperiod seeds.
Short-Term Storage – If you plan to germinate your seeds soon (within a few weeks or months), a ziplock bag stored in a drawer or cupboard works well.
Long-Term Storage – For longer storage periods, place seeds in an airtight container and store them in a refrigerator. Make sure the fridge stays consistently cool and dry, and avoid frequent opening of the container to prevent temperature shifts.
Best Time to Germinate Cannabis Seeds
While cannabis seeds can last several years if stored properly, we recommend germinating your seeds within 12 months for optimal results. This also keeps them within our 12-month germination guarantee period. If any seeds don’t sprout during that time, our Customer Success Team will replace them!
